  • What’s the difference between American and standard fridge freezers?

    An American fridge freezer differs from standard models in several key ways. The most obvious difference is size. American-style models are significantly larger, typically offering 450-600 litres of total capacity compared to 200-350 litres in standard fridge freezers. 

    The layout is also different. American fridge freezers usually feature a side-by-side double-door configuration (or French door style with top fridge doors and bottom freezer drawers). Standard fridge freezers are narrower with vertically stacked compartments and single doors for each section.

  • Are American-style fridge freezers worth it?

    It totally depends on your needs! For many people, an American fridge freezer is a worthwhile investment, as they’re typically larger with more features, which can be ideal for busier kitchens or larger families.   • Does an American fridge freezer need to be plumbed in?

    No, not necessarily. While there are plumbed options available, non-plumbed options are very common and are what we sell at Cookology. Plumbed models connect to your main water supply for a more continuous supply of chilled water, which doesn’t require manual refilling. However, this does mean that plumbed fridge freezers need to be installed near a water source and may require professional installation, which can limit where you can position the appliance in your kitchen. 

    Non-plumbed American fridge freezers can still have water dispensers – they just feature an internal water tank that needs to be manually filled. The advantage here is flexibility: because they don’t need a water connection, non-plumbed models can be positioned anywhere in your kitchen (as long as there’s a suitable power socket nearby) and are simpler to install. This makes them a practical choice for most UK homes.
