Explore American-Style Fridge Freezers With Various Layout Options
An American-style fridge freezer is a brilliant addition to any modern kitchen. Our range includes traditional side-by-side models with double doors that open to reveal generous fridge and freezer compartments. These classic designs offer excellent visibility and easy access. We also stock French door fridge freezers, which feature double doors on top for the fridge section and two convenient pull-out freezer drawers at the bottom – perfect for keeping frozen goods organised and easily accessible.
Looking for even more versatility? Our four-door American-style models take organisation to the next level, with multiple compartments that make it simple to separate different food types. Many of our American fridge freezers come with dedicated crisper drawers, ideal for keeping fruit and vegetables fresh for longer. Adjustable shelving lets you customise the interior space to suit your shopping habits.
When it comes to finishes, you’ll find sleek inox (stainless steel) options that bring a professional, modern look to your kitchen, as well as sophisticated black models that complement contemporary kitchen designs beautifully. Whichever style you choose, you can be confident that our American fridge freezers combine eye-catching aesthetics with practical, everyday functionality.
One of the standout features across various models in our range is frost-free technology. Unlike traditional models that require manual defrosting, our frost-free American fridge freezers use an automatic defrost cooling system to prevent ice build-up. This means no more chipping away at stubborn ice or emptying your freezer for hours-long defrosting sessions – the appliance does the hard work for you! You can also explore American-style fridge freezers with water dispensers to enjoy perfectly chilled water at the touch of a button.

American-Style Fridge Freezers FAQs
-
What is an American-style fridge freezer?
An American-style fridge freezer is a large-capacity refrigeration appliance that typically features a double-door design, offering significantly more storage space than standard models. The most common layout is side-by-side, where the fridge and freezer compartments sit next to each other, each with their own door.
-
What’s the difference between American and standard fridge freezers?
An American fridge freezer differs from standard models in several key ways. The most obvious difference is size. American-style models are significantly larger, typically offering 450-600 litres of total capacity compared to 200-350 litres in standard fridge freezers.
The layout is also different. American fridge freezers usually feature a side-by-side double-door configuration (or French door style with top fridge doors and bottom freezer drawers). Standard fridge freezers are narrower with vertically stacked compartments and single doors for each section.
-
Are American-style fridge freezers worth it?
It totally depends on your needs! For many people, an American fridge freezer is a worthwhile investment, as they’re typically larger with more features, which can be ideal for busier kitchens or larger families. The generous capacity means fewer shopping trips and better organisation, while features such as water dispensers and frost-free technology make day-to-day use more convenient.
That said, American fridge freezers do require more kitchen space and can be more expensive than smaller models. They’re particularly well-suited to households of four or more, home cooks who store lots of fresh ingredients, or anyone who likes to buy in bulk and meal prep.
Ultimately, it comes down to your space, budget, and lifestyle. Our blog, Why Have We Embraced American-Style Fridges in the UK? explains what makes these models different, explores the pros and cons, and helps you decide whether an American-style fridge freezer is right for you.
-
Does an American fridge freezer need to be plumbed in?
No, not necessarily. While there are plumbed options available, non-plumbed options are very common and are what we sell at Cookology. Plumbed models connect to your main water supply for a more continuous supply of chilled water, which doesn’t require manual refilling. However, this does mean that plumbed fridge freezers need to be installed near a water source and may require professional installation, which can limit where you can position the appliance in your kitchen.
Non-plumbed American fridge freezers can still have water dispensers – they just feature an internal water tank that needs to be manually filled. The advantage here is flexibility: because they don’t need a water connection, non-plumbed models can be positioned anywhere in your kitchen (as long as there’s a suitable power socket nearby) and are simpler to install. This makes them a practical choice for most UK homes.

What widths do American fridge freezers come in?
American fridge freezers come in a variety of widths, with ultra-slimline models starting at roughly 70cm, and extra-large models often 96cm and above.
We offer American fridge freezers in a variety of widths to suit different kitchen spaces. Our slimline 70cm models are perfect for those who want American-style storage without taking up too much floor space, while our popular 83cm options offer a great standard capacity. Need something even more spacious? We also stock larger 90cm models for those with bigger kitchens or larger families to feed.
We’d always recommend double-checking specific product dimensions and carefully measuring your available space before selecting a model to ensure it fits comfortably. Remember to account for door swing clearance, too!
