Downdraft Popup Cooker Hoods

Meet the latest and (arguably) greatest type of kitchen extractor fan: the downdraft extractor. Discover downdraft extractor cooker hoods

Designed to be integrated into your kitchen worktop, just behind your hob, downdraft extractors are virtually invisible when they’re not in use. Switch on the power and the extractor unit rises up from the worktop, its powerful motors drawing in odours and fumes from your hob and filtering them out – just like a traditional overhead cooker hood.

Despite their compact size, downdraft extractors are every bit as powerful as their overhead counterparts. This makes them ideal for use in smaller kitchens, and means they’re perfect for those craving a sleek, minimalist and contemporary aesthetic. Essentially, if you want the practicality of a cooker hood but don’t have room for one or don’t like the way they look, a downdraft extractor is the perfect solution.

Tactile touch controls and built-in LED lights make our extractor units simple to use, with multiple settings available for both fan speed and light intensity. Here, you’ll find downdraft extractors in a range of sizes and styles, with both stainless and black finishes available.

Downdraft Popup Cooker Hoods FAQs

  • How do downdraft cooker hoods work?

Downdraft cooker hoods work by drawing steam, grease, and cooking odours downwards, rather than upwards (like a traditional cooker hood). Positioned directly behind the hob, the downdraft extractor fan rises up from the worktop when switched on and pulls air sideways and down into powerful internal filters.

This method is especially effective because it captures fumes closer to the source, before they can spread around the kitchen.

  • Do downdraft extractors need to be vented?

Downdraft extractors can be installed in either ducted (vented) or recirculating configurations, depending on your kitchen layout.

Fully vented downdraft extractors expel air outside via ducting, offering the best in extraction efficiency. Recirculating downdraft extractor fans filter air before releasing it back into the kitchen – perfect where external venting isn’t possible.

Many Cookology downdraft cooker hoods support both installation types, giving you flexibility during installation. Learn more in our Downdraft Hob Buying Guide.

  • Where does the air go in a downdraft extractor?

The extracted air is pulled down into the downdraft extractor unit and then either:

    • Vented externally through ducting beneath the kitchen units, or
    • Filtered and recirculated back into the room via internal filters.

The airflow path is hidden beneath the worktop, keeping the kitchen looking clean and uncluttered – one of the biggest reasons customers choose a modern downdraft extractor over a traditional cooker hood.

  • Are downdraft extractor fans as powerful as traditional cooker hoods?

Yes. Modern downdraft extractor fans are designed with high-performance motors that rival wall-mounted and island hoods. While airflow ratings vary by model, many downdraft cooker hoods are more than capable of handling everyday cooking, including frying and boiling.

  • What size downdraft extractor do I need?

Choosing the right size depends on your hob width. The most common sizes are:

    • 60cm downdraft extractor – ideal for standard hobs and compact kitchens
    • 90cm downdraft extractor – best for larger hobs or open-plan kitchens

At Cookology, we also have 80cm options available. Your extractor should be at least the same width as your hob for optimal performance.
