Cooker Hood Extractor Fans by Size FAQs

  • What sizes do cooker hoods come in?

Cooker hoods don’t have fixed standard sizes, but certain widths are more commonly available. At Cookology, our cooker hoods range from 50cm to 110cm, providing options for all kitchen sizes and a wide variety of hob widths. We also offer a selection of downdraft extractor fans, which sit discreetly within your worktop and rise automatically when activated.

  • Should a cooker hood be the same width as the cooker?

In general, a cooker hood should be the same width as or slightly wider than, the hob or cooker it’s positioned above. The purpose of an extractor fan is to remove moisture, odours, and grease from the air. If the hood is narrower than the hob, it may be less effective at capturing fumes and steam.

  • What size range hood should I get?

As mentioned above, your range hood should be at least the same width as the hob or cooker beneath it. If you’re buying a new hob or cooker, simply note the width and select a hood that matches. If you’re replacing just the extractor, measure the width of your existing appliance to ensure a suitable fit. When it comes to downdraft extractors, they’re designed to fit within the depth of a standard kitchen counter.

You can find out more about downdraft extractors in our Downdraft Hob Buying Guide.

  • How to size a cooker hood?

Alongside width, there are several other factors to consider when sizing a cooker hood. The height at which the hood is installed is important – it should be positioned at least 75cm above the hob for both safety and optimal performance. Also consider the size of your kitchen: larger kitchens benefit from hoods with higher extraction rates. Measure your kitchen area and compare it with the extractor’s airflow capacity to ensure it’s suitable.

Our Cooker Hood Buying Guide helps answer some of the questions when searching for the right fit.

  • Can I fit a cooker hood myself?

While some cooker hoods can be installed as a DIY project, the process can be complex. Only attempt installation if you’re confident and have the necessary experience. Certain extractor models – such as our downdraft range – must be installed by a qualified electrician to validate the warranty.

Recirculating hoods are typically easier to install, as they don’t require external ducting. At Cookology, we offer a variety of cooker hoods that can either be ducted externally or used in recirculating mode with carbon filters. We also stock convenient ‘plug and play’ models fitted with a UK plug for quick and easy setup.
